What is Pediatric Psychology?

The subspecialty of pediatric psychology involves the evaluation, treatment, study, and prevention of problems in children with an acute or chronic medical condition, disability, or mental health problem, and their families.

Pediatric Psychology Services:

Services provided by pediatric psychologists may take many forms, depending on the nature of the problem. Assessment may consist of interviews, family and professional consultation, observations, and formal psychological testing.

Intervention may consist of: consultation with the family, pediatrician, medical staff, or school; individual, sibling, group, or family therapy; parent training/parent counseling, and behavior management; direct participation in medical procedures; relaxation training; instruction in pain management techniques.

Indications for Referral:

Pediatric psychology services are provided for inpatient and outpatient evaluation and treatment for children from infancy through adolescence.

Typical difficulties, which are appropriate for evaluation and/or treatment, include: familial, behavioral, or emotional problems; difficulty following medical treatment plans or adjustment to a medical condition; cognitive, school, or learning problems.

Children commonly referred for evaluation or treatment by pediatric psychologists include those with the following conditions:

  • Diabetes and endocrine problems
  • Asthma and respiratory problems
  • GI and Feeding problems
  • Other medical conditions
  • Pain disorders
  • Traumatic injuries, including brain injury
  • Obesity
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Behavior problems
  • Oppositional behavior
  • ADHD
  • Parent-child or family conflict
  • Developmental problems
  • Asperger's disorder
  • School/academic difficulties
