MWPH Welcomes New Board Members
Baltimore, MD (July 17, 2025) —The Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital (MWPH) Board of Trustees (Hospital Board) and the Mt. Washington Pediatric Foundation, Inc. (MWPF - Foundation Board) recently announced newly elected trustees to its respective boards.
Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital Board of Trustees
For nearly 20 years, MWPH has been co-owned by two of the state’s most respected research institutions—the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM). This unique and enduring collaboration ensures that shared patients receive a seamless, high-quality continuum of care throughout their recovery journeys. Reflecting the strength of this partnership, the Hospital Board of Trustees—MWPH’s governing board composed of representatives from both UMMS and JHM—has announced new leadership appointments: Mark Wietecha joins as a trustee; and Dr. Steven Czinn and Peter Mancino step into the roles of Chair and Vice Chair (respectively).
Dr. Steven J. Czinn, a nationally-known pediatric gastroenterologist, is The Drs. Rouben and Violet Jiji Endowed Professor of Pediatrics and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is also Director of the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital. Dr. Czinn came to the University of Maryland from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in the spring of 2006. In Ohio, he had served as Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology, and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.
Peter B. Mancino, Esq. is the Deputy General Counsel & Vice President of Corporate Compliance for The Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS). He is also the Secretary to the Board of Trustees of The Johns Hopkins Health System. Together with the General Counsel, he is administratively responsible for the management and oversight of JHHS Legal Department. Before coming to Johns Hopkins in 2010, Mr. Mancino was partner at a prominent New York law firm specializing in health law, Garfunkel Wild, P.C.
Mark Wietecha is managing director at Manatt, and is considered among the nation’s most experienced consultants to children’s hospitals and their pediatric academic missions with a focus on strategy, governance, and affiliations. Mark’s consulting career spans his current work with Manatt and his prior career at Kurt Salmon, a global consultancy now part of Accenture, where he was a senior partner and executive chairman of the firm. Between these roles, Mark was president and CEO of the Children’s Hospital Association in Washington, DC, where he led national advocacy efforts. During the COVID-19 crisis, he was instrumental in securing over $3 billion in federal relief for children’s hospitals and high-Medicaid providers.
“As Dr. Czinn prepares to take the helm as chair of this important governing body, I am grateful for Dr. Hackam’s guidance during my transition as president and CEO,” said Scott Klein, MD, MHSA, president and CEO of MWPH. “Dr. Hackam always offered his professional expertise as a pediatric surgeon. He remained dedicated to ensure that our patients, who transitioned from the acute to rehabilitative setting, received the same quality of care so that they can return home. During his three-year term as chair, Dr. Hackam helped us celebrate our centennial anniversary and led the modernization of the board’s governance, quality and safety practices, and fiscal oversight. We are grateful for his legacy and thankful for his support.”
Mt. Washington Pediatric Foundation, Inc.
The Mt. Washington Pediatric Foundation, the hospital’s community engagement and fundraising advisory group, has selected Alan Betten, Reco Collins, Kirby Fowler, Dr. Swati Goel, Dr. Julie King, and Lisa Stoler as new members of its board. Confirmed by the Hospital Board at its annual meeting in June, these new leaders will help further the hospital’s mission to provide support for the highest quality patient care programs for infants, children, and adolescents.
Last year, the Foundation led efforts in raising more than $3.2 million—marking the hospital’s second-largest fundraising total in the past decade. This extraordinary support from the community has directly enhanced the patient experience, empowered staff through continued education and training, and allowed the hospital to make essential capital upgrades.
“Because of the dedication of these outstanding leaders, the hospital is able to continue to help our families reach their goal of taking their children home,” said Klein. “It is an honor to work alongside this incredible group of men and women to expand our impact not just in Baltimore, but throughout Maryland and beyond.”
