Developmental Evaluation
MWPH’s Developmental Evaluation Clinic (DEC) evaluates and monitors developmental progression of children – and serves as a valuable resource for families. DEC is available at the Rogers Avenue location in Baltimore and the Capital Region Medical Center location in Largo. During a DEC evaluation, an inter-disciplinary team of professionals work collaboratively in coming up with a plan that meets both the family’s and the child’s needs.
Our Interdisciplinary Team - Developmental Pediatrician; Nursing; Occupational Therapist; Physical Therapist; Psychologist; Speech-Language Pathologist
Who We Are
The Developmental Evaluation Clinic at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital is an interdisciplinary team of developmental specialists who identify children at risk for developmental delays. Recommendations can include linking families to needed medical services (including rehabilitative therapy or behavioral health services), connecting them with social or financial advocacy resources, and referring them to community-based early intervention programs such as Infants and Toddlers and Child Find. The team might also recommend further genetic or neurological testing.
Who We Serve
We follow infants up to age 3 year at our Capital Region site and up to 4 years at our Rogers Avenue site who have been identified as having developmental delays or a factor that puts them at risk for developmental delays.
*We will see older children at both sites on a case-by-case basis.
We see children:
- Who are NICU/PICU graduates
- With poor/delayed language skills
- With poor/delayed gross or fine motor skill
- With developmental delay
- Who are “at risk” for developmental delay related to prematurity, medical challenges, neurological disorders and/or in utero exposure to substances
Scope of services
During your appointment our clinicians work in a coordinated fashion to provide a detailed assessment of your child’s overall abilities and synthesize an approach that is tailored to your child’s need. Our clinic integrates a holistic approach by a team of experts. Separate assessments are conducted by each discipline and the results are used to formulate a plan of care to ensure best possible outcomes for your child. After the evaluation, the team meets to identify and prioritize recommendations, which takes into consideration the parent/caregiver’s questions and goals. Assessment results and verbal feedback is provided at the end of the visit. The detailed summary report and recommendations are forwarded to the PCP and parents/caregivers.
