Hospital ventures forward successfully with continued growth in patient numbers, innovative care and community advocacy

BALTIMORE, MD (Oct. 16) – “The Adventures of Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital,” featuring stories of strength, courage and innovation was released today. Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital’s (MWPH) FY17 Annual Report shares numerous health care adventures and successful partnerships. Opened in 1922 as “Happy Hills Convalescent Home,” MWPH has become a hospital uniquely equipped to manage medically complex illnesses as well as a variety of other challenges.

Over the hospital’s 95-year history, significant milestones have included building the hospital (1988); expanding operations to Prince George’s County (1996); opening the Rosenberg Outpatient Center (2000); and building upon an exceptional partnership with the University of Maryland Medical System and Johns Hopkins Medicine (2006).

"Every day, our hospital strives to help young patients conquer health care challenges" said Sheldon Stein, President and CEO. "This year was unique because we were able to send patients with physical challenges to the National Ability Center in Utah, where they skied, went rock climbing and much more. The Abilities Adventures program provided a transformative experience for everyone involved. Our annual report's theme of adventure aptly describes the journeys taking place inside and beyond the hospital."

The Annual Report highlights growth in number of patients (from 8,635 in FY16 to 8,983 in FY17) and outpatient visits (from 47,917 in FY16 to 50,352 in FY17). Support also grew in terms of number of donors and increases in annual giving.

The stories within the report feature the victories of the “athletes” in Abilities Adventures, a young patient’s triumph over a tragedy, a doctor’s long journey to success, a novel approach to psychological treatment, the 10-year anniversary of the partnership with Spirit of Children, and many other adventures from the year.
