Vulvovaginitis is the inflammation of the vaginal and vulvar surfaces. Most commonly, the cause is unknown yet it can be treated with healthy perineal hygiene changes. Occasionally, the cause is a bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection, which is treated by medication. It is very common in young girls before their first period.
Labial Adhesions occur when a child’s inner vaginal labia fuse together after an infection or inflammation, such as a diaper rash. It occurs when the labia heal after the infection. Labial adhesions usually resolve spontaneously at puberty. They do not require treatment unless they cause difficulty urinating or urinary tract infections.
Menstrual Irregularities include an absence of a menstrual period, unpredictable menstrual bleeding or periods that are too frequent. There are many possible causes of menstrual irregularities, which include anovulatory bleeding, PCOS, and thyroid abnormalities.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition caused by a hormonal imbalance. It is a common cause of menstrual irregularity. Androgen excess is usually present, which can present as excess body hair, oily skin and acne. Ovarian cysts can also be present, but are not required to diagnose PCOS.
Ovarian Cysts and other Pelvic Masses are very common and appear as pouches or fluid filled sacs on or inside the ovaries. Most of the time, these masses are functional cysts and benign. They will often go unnoticed and disappear without treatment. They should be evaluated if they cause symptoms, persist or are complex in nature.
Precocious Puberty is when a child experiences the onset of puberty before age 7 for girls and 9 in boys and should be evaluated immediately.
Breast Problems may include masses, nipple discharge, redness and swelling of the breasts. Many of these issues are common and subside on their own through time. On occasion there are some circumstances where either medication, aspiration or a small surgical procedure may be necessary. It is very rare (0.01%) that breast cancer may occur in children.
