Orioles' Jason Johnson is special guest and inspiration to children living with diabetes.
Baltimore, Md. - Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital is sponsoring Diabetes Day at Camden Yards for children with diabetes and their families. The program is intended to provide diabetes education about insulin pump therapy. Research demonstrates that insulin pumps improve diabetes control and lifestyle. The event, scheduled for Saturday, May 17th at 1 p.m. at the Camden Yards Warehouse, is sold out with 125 children and parents participating.
Orioles' pitcher Jason Johnson, who has type I diabetes, will make a special appearance and sign autographs. The keynote speaker is Leslie Plotnick, M.D., Johns Hopkins pediatric endocrinologist, who will discuss Intensive Diabetes Management in Newly Diagnosed Children. The seminar, children's activities and dinner will be followed with everyone attending the Orioles Tampa Bay game together.
Linda Zeitzoff, R.N., CPNP, a pediatric diabetes educator at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital and event coordinator, says that the purpose of the event is to educate families and bring them together to network with others who are living with the day-to-day demands of diabetes. For the past seven years, Ms. Zeitzoff has coordinated the medical programs at Camp Glyndon - a camp for children with diabetes.
The event was made possible through the contributions of Animas Corporation, Medtronic Minimed, Novo Nordisk and Lifescan.
To be included in future diabetes education programs, e-mail lzeitzoff@mwph.org.
